Maternity Care

The first steps...
Sometimes we can be overwhelmed with all the information available about pregnancy and it can be useful to be guided as to where to start.
The first priority is looking after yourself. Learn what is safe to eat, what is healthy to eat and what supplements you are advised to take. You might need to make lifestyle changes; stop smoking; stop drinking alcohol; and do not use any recreational/illicit drugs - get help if you need it. Smartstart is a website created by the Ministry of Health that contains this and other important information. Head over to the "You're Pregnant" section to link to this site and find out what to look at in particular. You can also book for an "early pregnancy class" here.
You will of course need to choose a lead maternity carer (LMC) and a midwife is a popular option. Select the "Book for care" button below to fill in a form and check my availability. Again, smartstart has information about your options for care. Before choosing your LMC you should understand your rights as a user of the health care system. Read more here. To learn more about your midwife, her role and how and when to contact her select the "Your midwife" button below.

Get In Touch
I welcome your enquiries. I am on-call for labour and birth and this means my hours of work (and sleep) are variable. It also means I have to be especially protective of time with my own family. I find that email helps me manage this so please use the contact form to get in touch.
